Day 3 – This thing still stinks. Really stinks. I am looking forward to the day the good bacteria win out and the little waft escaping from the underside of the loose plastic cover is a pleasant, yeasty one. For now, I am going on faith that will happen. I feed. And wait.
Half way through the day, it sort of went flat. It was growing nicely, and the next time I looked it was about half the size. Does that mean something? I dunno. Never done this before. I will forge ahead and assume that because bubbles exist, we (we being this sourdough and I) are still headed in a good direction.

I simply picked mine up to look at it and it deflated right before my eyes! So, I think something even as simple as change in air pressure could cause it to deflate. But I’m with you, I think if it had bubbles, then it’s probably ok. I’m about where you are right now with mine.
Good for you! Ya, I completely forgot about my poor little starter and didn’t feed him last night :(. I need to do that right now and see if there is any chance of saving this little project. So far, day 2 was actually the most bubble I’ve seen yet. I’m thinking that is not a good sign, but I will forge ahead . . .
Well, mine finally died. Well, I guess I should say that I killed it. The bubbling wasn’t very impressive, it still smelled horrible, and then I had three fruit flies inside the jar doing who knows what for who knows how long. That was the last straw. Down the drain.
Hopefully it won’t take me another two years to start my next one :)!
Mine too, Jenna 😦
No fruit flies here, but mine got some kind of crust on top.
Oh no! Well, I do feel better that I am not alone :). Are you going to try again?
I think so. I’ve got friends telling me to try changing to a clean bowl each time I feed it and see if that helps. I may try again in a couple of days.
Let me know if you try again – maybe I will too :)!
